    Description

    1943
Captured in Africa - 5th Panzer Army
This POW letter was written and sent by a german soldier who was interned in the US POW camp Fort MCClellan in Alabama
He wrote that letter in 1943. Since I have several letters from this soldier, I know that he was with the 5th Panzer Army in Africa that was destroyed in Tunis in May 1943. Since then, the soldier was interned in Africa and then transferred to the United States
On the letter are several stamp prints such as US censor, the US dispatched stamp print from 11. october 1943 and the NY postmark
The soldier wrote the following lines to his wife:
Prisoner of war mail to Mrs Luise Smutny in Wörgl, Tyrol, Speckbacher street 4
Sender: Staff Sergeant Leopold Smutny, prison # 4 WG - 30067, prisoner of war camp Fort McClellan, Alabama USA
    11. october 1943
    Dearest Luisele !
I have not yet received any mail, except for the card from 19.7. I wait every day until a letter from you surprises me. Writing will probably be our only connection for some time. I have so much time to think, but when I have to write letters to you or a card to the parents, no thought comes to my mind. I get one letter and one card a week. I write the letters to you and the card to the parents. Unfortunately, I have not yet received any mail from the parents. I would like to know how Hanni and Ferde are doing. I have no idea how Hanni was during the birth. I hope that everything went well and that I have become a happy uncle. I ask you to write me about how Friedl and mother are doing, what the parents are doing and what else is new with the comrades. I am doing well also healthwise.  I spend my time with many things. One day this captivity will be over. Greetings and kisses to you, your Poidl
    Please note !!!
I googled both persons and found the receiver of that letter, Mrs Luise Smutny. She died last year age 100 on 24. November, still living in Wörgl, Tyrol. You can see her obituary with her photo when you enter: Frau Smutny Aloisia - detail Trauerhilfe bestattung
I have made a photo of the obituary
